"White Flag"

Jasper Johns

famous painting White Flag of Jasper Johns
Throughout the ‘50s and ‘60s, Jasper Johns was busy acquiring images of national significance, like flags, and making art out of them. To paraphrase his saying, Johns would work on images that the human minds around him were already familiar with. “White Flag” was a notable work out of his renowned Flag series, a series whose beginnings can be traced back to 1954. Johns performs a re-imagination of the American flag by depleting it off its essential shades, rendering it soulless. Something so intuitively known becomes a stranger to the naked eye. Jasper tries to play with one’s idea of their identity in relation to the country, thus making a powerful statement. “White Flag” can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. This kind of art is known as “encaustic art”. Jasper’s neo-dadaist work also dabbles in Pop art, which was also prevalent during the 60s.
