"Almond Tree in Blossom"
Pierre Bonnard
Pierre Bonnard is known more for his portrayal of still life, nudes and interiors, while The almond tree in blossom shows the influence that Impressionism had on him. Here he portrays a tall almond tree, it dominates the frame. There are no spatial illusions or geometry in the painting, just the tree in its glory, its branches extending into the sky. There is only the green bush that suggests anything outside of the tree. The tree had a magnificent influence over him, as he mentioned in a letter to Henri Matisse, “Today I saw the first almond tree blooming, and the mimosas are starting to make yellow spots”. He painted another version in the last week of his life before he passed away in his cottage on La Route de Serra Capeou near Le Cannet, on the French Riviera, in 1947. The next year, The Museum of Modern Art in New York City organized a posthumous retrospective of Bonnard's work.
