"Man at the Window"
Gustave Caillebotte - Oil On Canvas - 117 x 82 cm
Gustave Caillebotte was a French Impressionist artist, his style was more realistic than other artists. He strived to paint reality without the theatrics. His interest in photography grew and his focus on urban landscape intensified after his mother’s death. We see the influence of German romanticism in his painting Man at Window but has replaced the view of luscious nature with a cityscape. He paints his brother René Caillebotte, wearing informal clothes and standing on a balcony. The social status of the figure is emphasized by the chair and carpet. The elegant French architecture continues to the exterior, buildings line the road, leading to a crossroad. When this was exhibited, some critics expressed disappointment as there are many paintings with the same concept, and it seemed like Caillebotte had copied the composition. The most similar painting is Salvador Dali’s Woman at her Window.
