"Four Trees"
Egon Schiele - Oil On Canvas - 110 x 141 cm
Egon Schiele depicts a nature scene in this painting, an image of four trees along a horizontal line, and adapts it into a frenzy of colours- layers of red, orange, white and blue cover the sky with red trees against it, mountains in the background but the painting focuses on the shining sun behind it all. The trees, of various shapes and sizes, have been thought to symbolize society and those within it; the ones on the outside seem to be healthier than those on the inside. Schiele was an Expressionist, he liked to display emotions of betrayal, sorrow and passion which we can reflect in his choice of colours. His landscape works are very few but they have been the most reproduced. Four Trees is now housed in Belvedere in Vienna, Austria.
